This is a big first for him. This Thursday, near Cholet and to everyone’s surprise, the Frenchman Bruno Armirail, resident of the Groupama-FDJ training, won the title of French time trial champion, for the very first time since the start of his career. It is also the very first victory of the rider’s career, now 28 years old. To achieve his goals, the roller, who measures 1.90 meters, was well ahead of two former champions of France in the specialtynamely Rémi Cavagna, titleholder in 2020, but also defending champion Benjamin Thomas, who, at the finish, are respectively 24 and 30 seconds behind the big winner of the day, in a long time of 44.3 kilometers, where the gap between the protagonists was mainly made at the end of the course.
And six for Cordon-Ragot!
It was then that Cavagna but also Thomas seemed to have a lot more trouble, while at the second intermediate, after 19.2 kilometers of intense effort, the three men were still holding each other in just seven seconds. . This distance, the winner of the day, third in 2020 then second in 2021, was the only one among all the competitors to have completed it in less than 51 minutes, and more precisely in a time of 50 minutes and 50 seconds, at a average of 52.3 km/h. Bruno Armirail will not be able to wear his brand new jersey for the next Tour de France, which will take place between Friday 1st and Sunday 24th July, insofar as he was not selected by his group Groupama-FDJ. Last year, the main interested party was however very present on the prestigious cycling race. Among the ladies, again this Thursday near Cholet, it was Audrey Cordon-Ragot who was crowned, in this same discipline, for the sixth time.
