The president of the Scientific Council also pleads for a return of the mask in transport.

France is currently facing a new epidemic wave of COVID-19 fueled by the BA.5 variant of the coronavirus, said Wednesday Professor Alain Fischer, president of the advisory council on vaccine strategy.

Asked Wednesday on France 2 about the existence of a new epidemic wave in France, the specialist answered in the affirmative. “The question is: ‘how strong is the wave'”, he pointed out. This new epidemic wave is linked to the spread of the BA.5 variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, a little more contagious but not more than severe than the Omicron variant from which it is derived.

“There is an outbreak of the disease”. “There are more cases every day (…) for the moment it does not translate significantly into a increase in the number of hospitalizations and a fortiori death, but we know that there is always a lag”recalled Professor Alain Fischer.

A need for further reminders in the fall

In this context, Alain Fischer, chairman of the vaccine strategy guidance council, pleads for a new vaccination campaign for the elderly. It emphasizes on “the need to bring boosters closer together. For the over 80s, we thought it would be useful to do a second booster three months after the first. And for the 60-79 year olds, six months”he explains on the website of BFM TV.

“In autumnthere will be a need for further reminders”, warns Alain Fischer. But “If the situation is relatively satisfactory, [on pourrait] limiting ourselves again to vulnerable people, with a vaccination which could be coupled with the booster shot against the flu, as is done every year. For the moment, we are on this scenario, ” he indicates.

According to the infectiologist, this is necessary because the immunity of fragile people is weaker after three months.

Resurgence of the epidemic

According to the latest report from Public Health France (SPF), stopped on Tuesday, the daily number of new contaminations by the coronavirus stood at 95,217 – the biggest rise in 24 hours since the end of April, with a rise of 45.5% in seven days.

At the national level, the incidence rate amounts to 476 new contaminations per 100,000 inhabitants per week (up 28.8% in seven days).

Another sign of the resurgence of the epidemic, the reproduction ratecalled “effective R” by the researchers and which corresponds to the average number of contaminations generated by an infected person, now stands at 1.4.
