Lower Saxony’s municipalities reject the SPD’s demand for tablets to be loaned to all schoolchildren. “We are absolutely against free tablets, the parents can pay for them themselves,” said Marco Trips, President of the Lower Saxony Association of Towns and Municipalities (NSGB) of the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” (HAZ/Wednesday). Of course, you have to support needy parents financially. “The state does not have to give everyone else a free tablet,” said Trips in the interview.

In March they had SPD the provision of rental tablets for all pupils from the 2024/25 school year onwards as a central demand with a view to the state elections in autumn. Trips has now described this election promise as “a farmer’s trick”. According to him, the money should rather flow into teacher or educator training. He also doesn’t think tablets are necessary in elementary schools, it’s much too early.

trips called on the state to finally negotiate with the school book publishers that books come to the Lower Saxony school cloud. “In future we will no longer need textbooks. It’s nonsense to let the children lug around the heavy books every day,” said Trips.
