According to the operator, the private medical university planned in Erfurt is not expected to go into operation until the summer semester of 2023. The complex recruitment procedures for teachers, the selection of students and the decision on areas and construction measures for the university would have taken more time than planned under the conditions of the corona pandemic, HMU Health and Medical University GmbH announced on Wednesday. At the state recognition of the private university last September, there was talk of the expected start of training for medical students in the summer semester of 2022.

In the Erfurt According to the operator, the planned private medical university is not expected to go into operation until the summer semester of 2023.

Erfurt is to become the headquarters of the HMU, which will open in 2019 Potsdam was founded and is part of a private university group with additional locations in Berlin and Hamburg. The training of psychologists is also planned in Erfurt. For the 90 medical study places with which the university wants to start, there are currently 400 applications, said Managing Director Ilona Renken-Olthoff on request. The selection process should begin after the upcoming summer break. The university is located in a property in the city center that is rented.

The private university would be the second training center for prospective doctors in Thuringia alongside the state university in Jena, where the number of medical study places has been increased. Since last autumn, 286 students recorded, ten percent more than in previous years. In contrast to Jena, tuition fees are high in Erfurt. According to information on the HMU website, they are in the field of human medicine at 1500 euros per month. The HMU also refers to scholarships and loans for financing.

According to the HMU, the postponement was made in coordination with the cooperation partner for the training, the Helios Clinic Erfurt. For Science Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD), the shift in Erfurt is “understandable”, as he said through his spokesman. These have “recognisably with the adverse circumstances of the corona pandemic to do,” he explained. It is more important that the sometimes very complex preparations for studying medicine and psychology can be completed and that the students will find good general conditions in Erfurt in the future.
