A large piece of forest west of Aschaffenburg caught fire on Thursday. According to the police, in the afternoon on the Bavarian-Hessian border between Stockstadt and Babenhausen, the forest floor was on fire in an area the size of two soccer fields. Because of the high temperatures, the drought and the wind, the fire quickly spread to around 25,000 square meters – around three football fields – the police headquarters in Lower Franconia announced later in the evening.

Accordingly, several fire brigades with 300 emergency services were involved in the extinguishing operation. A firefighter was slightly injured. Around 5:00 p.m., the fire was largely under control, and the fight against small embers ended around 8:00 p.m., it said. The cause of the fire was still unclear, as was the extent of the damage.

The federal highway 26 had to because of the extinguishing work between the federal highway 469 and Babenhausen be completely closed until around 10 p.m. In the late afternoon and also in the evening, this led to significant traffic obstructions in the greater Aschaffenburg area and in neighboring Hesse.
