Ukraine and Moldova are now official EU– Candidates for accession: That was decided by the heads of state and government of the 27 EU countries on Thursday at their Brussels summit, as announced by Council President Charles Michel. He described the decision in the online service Twitter as a “historic moment”.
In a tweet, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the “historic” decision. The EU decision was made almost exactly four months after the start of Russia’s war of aggression against the Ukraine met.
Georgia, which coincided with its application Moldova submitted at the beginning of March, will receive candidate status “as soon as the outstanding priorities have been addressed,” wrote Michel. “Georgia’s future lies within the EU,” he stressed. Michel also wrote the tweets in the respective national languages, in Ukrainian, Georgian and Romanian.
