Russia is reportedly planning to build a recreation area on the site of the Mariupol Azovstal plant.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian government assured this Thursday that reconstruction was already underway on the site of the metallurgical plant, the scene of Ukrainian resistance, for months, against the Russian invasion of the port city.

“There is no need to restore Azovstal”assured Marat Khusnullin to the Russian public television channel Rossiya 24. “This area can continue to operate as an industrial park or a recreation area” he added.

$20 billion loss

Factory owner Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine’s richest man, said last month he planned to sue Russia. He would claim $20 billion in losses following the plant’s destruction.

Akhmetov’s company, Metinvest – Ukraine’s largest pre-war employer – said in April that it “would never operate under Russian occupation”.

According to the company, no less than 153 Metinvest employees were killed during the capture of Mariupol by Russia.

Develop tourism

Khusnullin also said that Russia, which now occupies most of Ukraine’s coast, plans to increase Mariupol’s port capacity and develop local tourism.

And add:The costs of this work are difficult to estimate, but they are quite high.

Russia took full control of the port city of Mariupol last month after about 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers who held the Azovstal plant surrendered.
